Real Talk: My Experience with Microneedling

Hi everyone and welcome back to the blog! I am very excited about today's post because a lot of you were super responsive to my last skin-focused post. This time instead of just talking about my daily routine, I am going to discuss something else I've done to improve the overall appearance of my skin, and especially my acne scarring.

I have been struggling with scarring, mainly around my chin, for quite some time, and while basic topical remedies have helped slightly, I have been amazed with my results from Microneedling.

Now, full disclosure, I didn't know what Microneedling was until fairly recently. When I was at a graduation party over the summer, I had been talking about skincare with one of my friends and she told me that Debbie had advised her to try Microneedling also known as, Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT) for her acne scarring. Debbie is a dear family friend and a Medical Aesthetician at Zeph Cosmetic Surgery in Carmel. Debbie and I began discussing my skincare routine, my skin concerns and we decided to set up an appointment.

When the time for my appointment came, I was a bit nervous but excited too, as I assumed it would be rather painful. However, I couldn't be happier with how the appointment turned out. Debbie is incredibly knowledgable and made me feel comfortable right away. She explained how Microneedling would help soften the scarring making it less visible by breaking down the scar and stimulating a wound healing response.  This is done by making micro perforations on your skin using a single use 12 small 33G needle inserted into a unique hand piece that allows us to control speed and depth.

I had very little pain or irritation during the treatment, and the recovery time is quick. Debbie told me not to use makeup or treatment on my skin for the first day and that I would experience redness that would look like a sunburn, which was exactly right! Once my appointment was over, I had slight redness that increased over the next 24 hours to look like a sunburn. Imagine your first day of spring break with no sunscreen.

The next day my skin was back to normal and I experienced no further irritation. Debbie followed up with me to see how I was doing and now, a little over a month later, I have recognized incredible results. I have felt more confident skipping my foundation to show my natural skin, when I previously would have never wanted to. Even though after one treatment your skin won't be perfect, people have already started to see a difference and I have too. I look forward to my next treatment with Debbie at Zeph Cosmetic Surgery, and strongly encourage you to try this if you struggle with scarring (me) or signs of aging.

I know I have said it before, but your skin is so important to protect, so make sure your investing in it! Unlike your clothes, you have no choice but to wear it with you everywhere you go! As always, keep in touch via Instagram, @em.schill and I will be happy to answer any of your questions regarding my Microneedling experience.
